Sons of the American Legion Membership Requirements

 

To be eligible, you must be a male descendant (includes stepsons and adopted sons) of a member of The American Legion (male or female)

You would also be eligible to join the Sons of The American Legion if you are the male descendant (stepsons and adopted sons included) of a veteran who died in service from the following dates (As listed Below) World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, or the Persian Gulf War. (Potential S.A.L. members should use these dates to determine if their parents or grandparents are/were eligible for membership in The American Legion)

 

You would also be eligible to join the Sons of The American Legion if you are the male descendant (stepsons and adopted sons included) of a veteran (Male or Female) who died subsequent to his or her honorable discharge from service in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, or the Persian Gulf War (the same eligibility periods apply as below).

 

Eligibility only need to be during one day listed below of active duty (National Guard and Reserve... Basic Training during those dates does apply.)

For any questions on eligibility please contact your local post/squadron or Department Headquarters.

 

Unfortunately Nephews, Brothers, Uncles and Cousins, Wards or Foster Children

are not eligible for the Sons of the American Legion.

TRAVELING MEMBERSHIP TROPHIES

CLYDE STILLWELL MEMBERSHIP TROPHY

Awarded annually to the Squadron that has the largest percentage increase over the previous years membership report used to determined Delegate strength to the Annual Detachment of Illinois

Convention. To be eligible, a squadron only needs to be chartered in the previous year.

This trophy was given to the Detachment of Illinois in memory of Clyde Stillwell, who was the

Department of Illinois S.A.L. Chairman in 1963, the year the Detachment was organized. The trophy

was donated by Mrs. Clyde (Clara) Stillwell, who was a member of Champaign Legion Auxillary

Unit #24, and Past National S.A.L. Commander J.R. Stillwell, a member of Champaign Legion Post #24 and Champaign S.A.L. Squadron #24. (19th District, 4th Division)

ROY MITCHELL MEMBERSHIP TROPHY

Awarded annually to the Squadron that has the largest numerical increase over the previous years membership report used to determined Delegate strength to the Annual Detachment of Illinois Convention. To be eligible, a squadron only needs to be chartered in the previous year.

This trophy was given to the Detachment of Illinois in memory of Roy Mitchell, the first person from DuQuoin killed during World War One.. The trophy was donated by the members.

ANTHONY BADAMO MEMBERSHIP TROPHY

Awarded annually to the Squadron that has the largest percentage increase over the previous years membership report used to determined Delegate strength to the Annual Detachment of Illinois Convention. To be eligible, a squadron must have at least twenty (20) members in the previous year. This trophy was given to the Detachment of Illinois by Past Department Commander Anthony Badamo, who was a member of Quincy Post #37, Quincy Illinois. (15th District, 3rd Division)

PFC JAMES T. CUMMINGS JR. MEMBERSHIP TROPHY

Awarded annually to the Squadron that has the largest percentage increase over the previous years membership report used to determined Delegate strength to the Annual Detachment of Illinois Convention. To be eligible, a squadron must have at least seventy-five (75) members in the

previous year. This trophy was given to the Detachment of Illinois in memory of PFC James T. Cummings Jr.,  who was killed in action during the Vietnam War.. The trophy was donated by Past Detachment Commander Frederick E. Reis, a member of Wauconda S.A.L. Squadron #911, Wauconda Illinois. (11th District, 2nd Division)
